Holiday weight gain statistics don’t sound as grim as some people have assumed with most people probably only gaining about a pound during the holiday season.
But the not-so-merry news is researchers believe that little bit of weight the average person gains every year happens during the holidays. And, those one to two pounds every year adds up.
Americans tend to gain .4 to 1.8 pounds each year, but researchers were curious whether that weight gain had anything to do with the holidays.
At that rate, a 20-year-old who weighs 130 pounds may weight 148 at age 30, 166 at age 40, 184 at age 50 and 202 at age 60. And researchers now believe you can blame it on that pumpkin pie, dressing with gravy, gingerbread cookies and eggnog.
According to a study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, extra weight accumulates through the years. They looked at how the holidays affected the weight gain of people.
During the study people were weighted at six week intervals before, during and after the winter holiday season. The people they studied gained 1.05 pounds during the year with .8 (the majority) of the weight occurring during the six weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s Day.
With more than half of American adults being overweight, it’s important to do what you can to avoid holiday weight gain.
According to researchers there were two secrets or holiday weight loss tips that were common among those studied who maintained or lost weight during the holidays:
No. 1 Secret for Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain: Stay active. People who reported that they were more active during the holidays did not gain weight. Instead of shopping on-line, put on your Shape-Up shoes and do some mall walking. Also, go Christmas caroling or take a holiday stroll or walking tour of the neighborhood to see the lights. Put on some mittens and a scarf and go ice skating or sled riding with your children! Also, continue your regular weight training or use exercise DVDs such as The Firm, Denise Austin, the Insanity Workout or Pilates.
No. 2 Holiday Weight Loss Tip: Don’t let yourself become too hungry. Successful people who maintained or lost weight during the holidays reported being less hungry. Only you know what makes you personally hungry. For some people, it’s all about avoiding sugar, for other people, it’s about skipping the cheese fondue or the creamy eggnog. If you do better on a low-carb diet, just enjoy the turkey at Thanksgiving with a side of green beans and a dab of mashed potatoes. You won’t die by skipping the dressing with gravy or the homemade apple pie. Researchers say people who don’t get enough sleep tend to overeat so make sure during the holidays to get more sleep!
You don’t have to be a victim of the holiday weight gain statistics. The holiday weight gain facts reveal people gain only a pound, not the five to 10 pounds everyone imagined. But those one to two pounds of holiday weight gain appears to snowball over the years.
