When you have a cold or cough, there are natural homemade remedies you can use to ease your discomfort and get back to proper health. Here are some great homemade cough syrups made from natural ingredients that you don’t need to worry about overdosing on or getting drowsy after using. They even tastes better than the cough syrups from the store (what doesn’t?).
Onions are a natural cough suppressant, so it’s no surprise that this homemade and easy recipe works so well. Simply take an onion (white) and slice it thinly, and sprinkle the slices liberally with regular sugar. Allow to set for 15 minutes or so until the sugar has absorbed the liquid from the onion and you have a syrup. Drain the onion/sugar syrup in a bowl and take a teaspoon of the liquid as necessary. A great way to relieve your coughing fits. I would substitute honey for the sugar to make the recipe that much more antibacterial and fight-worthy of your cough and mucous. The longer you let the concoction sit before using, the more syrup you get.
A great cough syrup to clear up the lungs and stuffy face issues is this one. I love it. It’s a little hot, but when you have a lingering cough and cold and want relief, you’ll try anything. Take 1/2 cup of honey, 1 tablespoon of chopped garlic, 1 teaspoon of horseradish, and add a teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Boil the concoction on the stove until well-mixed and allow to cool so you can take a teaspoon at a time to relieve your mucousy symptoms. I warn you, this recipe is a hot one, and not too tasty, but if you chase it with another teaspoon of fresh honey it goes down a lot better. This recipe creates a natural expectorant so you can successfully get mucous and bacteria out of your lungs and sinuses and finally breathe. Honey and garlic are natural antibacterials and anti-inflammatories and act as a natural antibiotic for your poor sick body. The hot horseradish and Cayenne pepper really open up those sinuses. Try it. For me it works great after the antibiotics from the doctor have run out and the cold and bronchitis is still lingering.
Want a sweet cough syrup recipe? Mix one box brown sugar with one cup lemon juice, boiling on the stove for 15 minutes. Allow to cool, and sip a teaspoon or 2 as needed. The lemon is a natural antibacterial and the sugar helps to quell coughing. A great recipe for children who don’t tolerate cough syrup flavor well.
Even just taking honey and Cayenne pepper mixed together can help quell your coughing and get you on your way to health. Always drink lots of water and get your rest along with your natural cough and cold medicines, and you are well on your way to getting well.
