When my dog has bad breath, it smells like someone took a crap in her mouth. Time for a breath mint, or when I can get her to take a spritz (she’s afraid of the bottle) a quick spray to rectify her foul-smelling breath. It’s easy to make a homemade breath mint or spray for your dog so everyone is happy when your dog breathes right in your face.
All you need to make a quick breath mint for your dog that they will eat without complaint is fresh mint leaves, salt free crackers or oatmeal, and water. Such a simple recipe produces huge results!
Take 1/4 cup of finely chopped (or pureed) mint leaves, combine it with 5 super finely crunched crackers or about 1/4 cup of oatmeal (instant or old fashioned), and add water until the mixture is sticky, adding about a tablespoon at a time. You’re looking for a paste that will stick together, but not so much water the mixture becomes runny. About 2 tablespoons of water suffices.
Make dime-sized treats by rolling the paste in your hands and placing the mints on waxed paper. When you have used all the paste ( usually get between 8 and 15 mints) place the mints in the freezer to set and feed them to your dog as you need to. Dogs love frozen treats and should lap the mints right up.
A dog breath spray is convenient as well. Simply mix 2 drops of mint extract with a spray bottle of water to quickly spritz your dog’s mouth when their breath bothers you, or put a few drops of the oil in their water dish. Peppermint oil or spearmint oil both work, but my dog finds spearmint to be more drinkable. If your dog just can’t stand the mint, pour a teaspoon of dried parsley flakes and a tiny squirt of lemon juice in a spray bottle and spritz that. Lemon a teaspoon) in the dog water also assists in bad breath, as the lemon kills bacteria. Vinegar (about a teaspoon) in their water helps as well. I’ve heard it also repels fleas, but I don’t know for sure. My dog drinks apple cider vinegar in her dog water no problem, better than spearmint in her water or the breath spray, but I’ve had success with all!
