The indoor dog potty is a great invention for people who are gone from home for long hours and can’t put their dog outside in time for them to do their business. Dog potties are also great if you live in an apartment or in a place that does not have a lawn for your dog to pee on. I am all for people having dogs in apartments and an indoor place for a dog to go can help make apartment living with a dog easier.
A dog potty is simply a deep tray with a grate or screen on the top. In the bottom of the tray is a place to put some newspaper or a dog pad to sop up urine and keep it in the tray. Special pads are sold to use in the tray or you can just use newspaper which is more economical and better for the environment. The dog steps on the grate or screen and pees or defecates on the screen. Urine flows into the tray and is caught on the paper or dog pad. Your dog’s feet never come into contact with the urine. Poop stays on top of the screen and can be picked up and tossed out.
The dog potty is like a litter box for a cat so people should not get too excited by their dog going in the house. A dog is easily trained to go in just one spot so they will accept using an indoor dog outhouse. Dogs do not want to go in their living area so they look for a place that is not where they sleep and eat. Choose a place where your dog doesn’t eat or sleep to put your indoor dog potty and they will like it better. Your bathroom is a great place to put it since that is where you go.
When the dog has used the potty you can pick up the grate and run hot water over it. Throw out the pad or newspaper that is in the tray and rinse out the tray. It is as easy as cleaning out a cats litter box.
There are several brands of dog potties on the market today, for example, http://puppybuzz.com/indoor-dog-potty/, or you can make your own homemade one. Just get a deep boot tray from a hardware store like Menards. Purchase a grate or screen and place it over the boot tray then put newspaper in the boot tray to sop up wetness. If you can’t find a grate or a screen you can use some thick Astroturf in place of a screen or grate. Your dog potty should be longer than and more then twice as wide as your dog is.
