The mini SUV, (sport utility vehicle) saves on gas, compared to the regular size SUVs and mini-vans. If you don’t need to move 7 passengers at once or the space of a larger SUV, then you may want to consider a CRV or a RAV.
Cars are lower to the ground. If you’ve ever driven a SUV or mini-van you notice that you can see over other cars and it’s easier to drive when you can see over cars rather than through them.
Versatility with Style
2WD vs. 4WD – most of us will do fine with a 2WD car. However if you are in the situation of sand, snow, mud, steep inclines, and/or towing – but don’t need a truck or larger vehicle for your day to day driving, you’ll want to consider a mini SUV. The CRV and RAV are easy to maneuver in city and highway, while giving you the flexibility for weekend activities that may need more than a regular auto would allow. Besides, they are sporty and stylish.
Differences of the CRV and the RAV
The major difference that people notice and research is that the RAV is slightly larger and longer than the CRV. In addition, the RAV comes in both 4 cyl and 6 cyl models, the CRV does not. Don’t let this fool you, if you aren’t in need to pull a lot of weight with your mini SUVs, the 4 cyl, 4WD models are more than enough to pull your weekend toys, i.e. Jet skies, small size boats/canoes, and light hauling. Check with the manufacturer of the hitch you are installing and search forums to see other user’s experience. Standard towing according to both models is 1500 pounds.
Similarities of the CRV and RAV
The starting prices are about the same: $21,695 for a Honda CRV and $21,925 for a Toyota RAV. Both models have a 36 months/36,000 mile basic warranty which can be extended and 60 months/60,000 miles on the power train. Seating capacity is 5, and an unlimited miles/60 month anti-corrosion warranty.
My CR-V Experience
I have a 2005 White Honda CR-V. I love my car. It’s probably the best automobile that I’ve ever had the privilege of owning and driving. I got a great end of the year price, while the 2006 models were coming in, there was little difference – the sales person told me it’s my choice to save several thousand on this year’s model which was going out the door or buying the newer model at regular price. That’s a no brainer as I wanted the SE, which at that time it is today’s EX-L.
Leather seats were easier to care for with two long haired dogs, the all white look was extremely attractive as the other models had the black vinyl panels on the lower half of the CRV and it has a sunroof, automatic window, and side windows. My last car had manual side window and I knew going in – how much I had to spend and what I absolutely wanted – power side windows, allow tires, and an all white – no black trim.
Since I lived in Hawaii, my CRV barely had 30,000 miles on it before I shipped it to California in early 2009 – for the drive cross country to FL. My baby had a major tune up and I had a hitch attached before being given the go ahead, cleaned and pampered for its’ voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
Stats of the New Model CRV and RAV
The 2011 Honda CRV comes in four models:
LX: the basic CR-V comes in 2WD (mileage 21 city/28 hwy) and the 4WD (mileage 21 city/27 highway). 17 inch steel rim wheels, with 5-speed automatic transmission, which is possibly why they don’t offer the CRV in a 6 cyl model; the 4 cyl has more power than a brand new mini-van I drove with 6 cyl.
SE: added to the LX with 17 inch alloy wheels which don’t rust and look very sporty, upgraded six discs CD audio system, with a total of six speakers, and wheel-mounted audio controls.
EX: along with the features of the SE, this model adds or replaces – a security system with remote entry, a power moon roof with tilt feature, a cargo shelf, exterior temperature indicator, and a compass.
EX-L: This is the cherry model – has all the features of the other basic, SE, EX models and adds or replaces features like: auto on/off headlights, body-colored door handles and mirrors, give a nice sleek look, leather interior, heated front seats, center console, USB audio interface, higher wattage AM/FM/6 disc audio with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. Steering wheel-mounted navigation and phone controls.
An additional, a Honda Navigational system can be added with voice recognition, Bluetooth, and audio card reader.
The 2011 Toyota RAV
There are three models to choose from and most models have the choice of engine size 4 cyl or 6 cyl, 2WD and 4WD and 4-speed automatic transmission. They are the RAV4, the Sport, and the Limited.

Similar to the CRV, the RAV basic model go from the basic package of steel wheels, up to the leather seats and moon roof.
