With the price of hay being at an all time high in the UK, horse owners are looking for ways to stretch their budget and offer alternative forages to their horses. Lucie Brix from Simple System Horse Feeds are a great way to do just this. They are also easy to feed, great for the horse and offer a respite from stable boredom.
If you visit the Simple System website, they describe themselves as “a specialist horse feed company dedicated to bringing you the very best forage feed diet for your horses. We pride ourselves on dealing directly with our customers to advise not only on good feeding practices but also responsible management, taking a full holistic approach to feeding and horse care.”
Simple Systems takes a holistic approach to horse nutrition stating, “Our range of equine feeds has been developed to meet the special needs of the horse’s unique digestive system. You will find all of the products are FREE from: cereals and their by-products, pulses, molasses, preservatives and additives. The feeding system is beneficial for all breeds and types of horses, as well as addressing all the issues and levels of work that come with modern day horse management. At the same time, we respect the fact that a horse is a plains-dwelling, herd-living, obligate herbivore or vegan. Simple System Ltd is the only horse feed company to have the entire range of its products registered with the Vegan Society. “
One of their newer products are one kilogram blocks of compressed Lucerne chop (also known as Alfalfa) called “Lucie Brix”. They describe this product as “All the benefits of pure Lucerne, compressed into 1kg (approx.) block. We suggest that these are fed whole and dry to mimic grazing, which may reduce the tendency to chew wood. Easy and convenient to feed.” We ordered a bag of these to try out at our yard as a possible supplement to hay. Lucie Brix come in a 20 kg bag and they are very easy to feed. No hay net needed, just place the block in the stable on the floor or in a feed bucket. The four horses at our yard all loved them. It took various amounts of time for each horse to eat them though from a couple of hours to only 45 minutes for the big hungry mare (my horse, of course). The blocks smell lovely and are a lovely color. They crumble into nice forage that the horses enjoyed eating. Lucerne is a great substance for horses and helps their condition. We have already ordered more bags to help supplement the horses through the winter. Lucie Brix also kept the horses busy in their stables for a while which during the long harsh winter days when they can’t go out, is a great way to relieve boredom and mimic grazing.
If you would like to supplement your hay and give your horses a nutritional treat, go to the Simple System website at http://www.simplesystem.co.uk and order Lucie Brix. If there isn’t a stockist near you, they offer a delivery service that is fast and friendly.
