“House” Season 7 Episode 1 “Now What?” begins just as the previous episode ended, with House and Cuddy falling in love in the ruins of House’s bathroom. All things considered, it is one of the strangest lovemakings ever depicted on TV.
Spoilers surely follow.
Things start out very tenderly, with Cuddy changing House’s bandage and cleaning him up after a fashion. She even kisses the ruined part of his leg, the appendage that has given him so much agony over the years. No doubt she is offering proof that she loves all of him, even that part that has made him such a misanthrope and has driven him to drug-addicted madness.
After the sex, there is an actual expression of tenderness in House’s eyes, as well as no little confusion. Tender feelings do not come naturally to Gregory House. He is used to masking his agony, along with drugs, with a veneer of sarcasm verging on rage. Happiness is not something he is used to, and this confuses and worries him.
Meanwhile, the team has a serious problem. Richardson, the hospital’s sole neurosurgeon, has gotten seriously ill, thrown up all over the OR, and has gone home. If the DPH finds out, parts of the hospital could be closed down. With House and Cuddy not returning calls (little do they know why), the team decides to try to fix Richardson.
Meanwhile it looks like 13 is headed for a leave of absence to Rome where a new Huntington’s study is being done. Foreman is skeptical. Taub, on the other hand, is of the opinion that living fast and dying young is overrated, so good for her.
The first round of treatment for Richardson, the neurosurgeon, seems to go well. Unfortunately the side effects seem to include insanity, which manifests itself in front of the DPH inspector. The hospital is ordered to close down its ER and ICU.
In the meantime, House and Cuddy are having a bizarre morning of bathing, breakfast, boggle, light banter, and an attempt to open a bottle of champagne with a sword. A repeat performance of sex follows. This is proceeded by a noise of someone breaking into the house. House finds that it is Wilson who, being concerned about House and having tried the phone and knocking on the front door, is now stuck going through the window.
Everything is fine, House reassures him. I’m having sex with Cuddy. Wilson has heard that one before and asks how many drugs House has taken. Even though Cuddy is nowhere to be found, Wilson examines House and finds that he is not high. So why is House lying about sex with Cuddy?
As it turns out, Cuddy is hiding in the closet. She is not ready yet to go public with her new relationship with House. After a brief flirtation with a spur of the moment trip to France, the lovers decide to take things one day at a time, with the idea of a Parisian holiday later. Clearly they are both worried about what comes next.
In the meantime, the team discovers that Richardson has had some bad sea food. The new treatment brings him back, the DPH inspector rescinds his order to close down the ER and ICU, and all is well.
Except, 13 is not going to Rome. Foreman checked. She has chosen to disappear, perhaps to do that living fast and dying young thing.
To be continued.
