Many kids dread the idea of writing, especially those who are in the elementary grades. Boys especially seem to have a hard time in this area. So how can you help your children learn to develop a love of writing? The answer is really not as complicated as you may think. It really is all about finding something that they like, and enjoy. For this article we will talk about how a movie project can really encourage you child’s writing abilities. Since most kids really love to watch movies over, and over again, why not allow them to use their imagination and make their own. Below you will find some simple suggestions.
Create the storyline
First you will want to tell your child, your idea of making their own homemade movie. In order to get started on the actual taping of the movie they will first have to create their story line. All you need for them is a pencil, and a notebook. Let them know that they don’t have to finish the entire story in one day, but that they can actually take their time, and write a little bit each day.
Getting ideas from play
Just sitting, and trying to think of ideas can be challenging for kids. Instead it may prove to be beneficial to have them start to play, or act out their movie. As they are playing they will get new ideas. Tell them that each time they get a new idea for their movie they need to write it down. Sometimes playing, and acting out the characters of their movie can really prove helpful in letting their imagination really blossom.
Be involved in the activity
In order for your child to really enjoy the activity you as the parent has to be involved. You can really help them along when they are trying to crate scenes for their movie by playing along with them. Not only will your child see it as a fun project but they will be very happy that their parent is involved. It allows for a little one on one time with your child, and helps them see the benefits of writing down their thoughts.
Allow them to direct
Purchasing an inexpensive camera that your child can use by themselves is a really good idea. This will make them feel a lot more independent and they will really enjoy being able to film the different scenes themselves. First you will need to show them how to use the camera. Once they have practiced using the camera you can guide them into putting their movie together. What is really nice about allow them to direct is that it gives them control over their project. Show them how to take what they have written down, and transform it into a fun movie scene. Before you know it your child will want to write so that they can film again and again.
