Facts About Pears
How Long Does It Take For Pears To Mature?
Pear trees usually blossom in early April and begin to form small cherry sized pears. These small pears grow and mature during the early summer months and are usually ready to be picked in late June and July.
How Can You Tell If Your Pears Are Mature and Ready To Be Picked?
Unlike the apple, pears are not ripened on tree. In fact leaving a pear on the tree until its ripe will cause it to be mush and gritty tasting. In order to ripen pears they are picked from the tree mature but unripe. To tell if your pears are mature lift them to a horizontal position and if they are mature and ready to be picked they will easily detach from the tree.
Whats the Best Way To Pick Pears?
To pick pears from the tree, grasp the fruit firmly, lift in a horizontal position and gently detach by twisting or rolling to make separate the stem from the tree. Do not yank or tug on the pear as this can damage the pear tree.
How To Ripen Pears
Once picked you will need to cool your pears in a refrigerator for a couple of days to start the riping process. When you are ready to eat your pears remove them from the refrigerator and allow them to sit at room temperature for a day or two. To tell if your pear is ripe hold it in your hand and apply pressure with your thumb just below where the stem attaches. If the flesh of the pear gives easily its ripe and ready to eat if it doesn’t your pear is not quite ripe yet.
Whats The Best Way To Store Pears and How Long Can You Store Them?
Once a pear is ripe it can only be stored a couple of days in the refrigerator before it goes bad. Pears should be stored in a bowl or plastic container without a lid. If you have more ripe pears than you can eat in a couple of days pears can be canned, frozen or made into pear butter to make them last longer.
What Can You Make Using Pears?
Pears can be used in place of apples in any recipe that calls for apples. Pears can also be baked, poached, grilled or made into a sorbet.
