Tonight’s “House” introduced one of the most interesting characters to the show in a long time. She has great potential, and hopefully the producers will use her accordingly. Martha Masters could be an interesting foil for House, and is very different from long-term female member of House’s team, Dr. Cameron. “House” comes on Monday nights at 8 pm ET.
Masters versus House
House is one of the smartest characters on television currently. He is also devious and heartless at times though. He has one major focus, which is to solve cases. His concern for his clients is usually only there because they offer a challenge to him. He spends his time berating those he works with on a daily basis. He pushes everyone around except Cuddy, his boss and Wilson, the one doctor he truly respects. Every once in a while though, a case breaks through his cold exterior, and the true House shines through.
Meanwhile, Martha Masters is a bright shining, young med student, who is full of potential. She is the one person who might be smarter than Gregory House on the show. She seems to be set up to be the Mycroft Holmes to House’s Sherlock Holmes. (Mycroft would be Sherlock’s smarter brother) The big difference between Martha and Gregory though goes beyond mere IQ. Martha brings in the decent, honest character that House’s team sorely needed. Still, he is able to one up her because she doesn’t have the ability to think outside of the box the way House does. This puts him in the position of power he thrives on.
Masters versus Cameron
In the first several seasons, Cameron was the young, attractive doctor on “House.” She was intelligent and decent. However, Masters is like Cameron on steroids. Cameron often would make the moral argument, but all too often would give in to House’s brain, which was attracted too. Martha should definitely not have that problem. To go a step further, though, Cameron was whiney. Masters, currently, hasn’t shown this shortcoming. She has showcased a weakness to stand up for herself at times, but it was her introductory episode. In this episode, she learned a great deal about House. Odds are, she won’t be a pushover for long. If she truly learned, she could have a power that Cameron never could muster.
Martha Masters could be just what “House” needs. The show is always willing to push boundaries that most prime time shows wouldn’t try. For the last six seasons, we have seen House rule the roost but now for the first time, he could be in the position of being out thought. Until this point, he really hasn’t had to worry about that. Also, with Martha’s willingness to always do the right things, House will have to work twice as hard to pull off some of his more dubious stunts. Hopefully, the show won’t weaken her character by automatically having her cave on her moral stand points. Next week will be an excellent chance to see what will be made of her, as it won’t be an episode solely devoted to proving why House needs her.
