I joined Fortitude as I got lured into the promise of possibly making $10 to $100 on the site for a single, well-written article. I admit it, I actually paid to join a writing site, and now I’m slowly gaining that money back.
Fortitude works by allowing you to submit original, not previously published articles that go under review by fellow writers of the site. If they like it, you get $10 to $100 for it hitting the front page. If it doesn’t rate well, it goes on the inside page where you get nothing for your efforts (not even page view pay), and the privilege of republishing your article elsewhere for hopefully getting some money out of it.
It’s difficult to hit the front page, when as of now only ONE article hits the front page daily. Out of an average of at least 5 articles, that’s a 20% chance you’ll get paid for your article. Since it’s based upon the likes of the other writers, there’s no guarantee that even your best article ever will get payment on this site. I would have already canceled my membership had I not paid to join. So I’m making my money back by utilizing the site to my best interests, and it’s actually making my membership more worthwhile.
As long as you don’t have an article waiting in review, you get the liberty of reviewing the other submitted articles, which is both fun to do (most of them are truly very good and deserve that monetary reward), and worthwhile. You get paid $.05 for every article you review, so with an average of 5 entries a day, if you’re just reviewing articles you make a whopping $.25 in a day for about 10 minutes of your time.
Normally, I would shy away from this. But I’ve got my $23.88 to get back, and at least this is guaranteed payment. My sole use of Fortitude now is to simply review and rate articles for the trivial pay I get daily, knowing that in a month I’ll accrue about $7 or more for my efforts. Sounds like a pittance, but at least I’m getting my money back.
I might submit an article here and there to see what happens, but I’m a bit turned off (OK, a lotta bit turned off) by the fact that if I want immediate payment for my efforts after reaching $5 I have to relinquish about 20% of my earnings. Otherwise, I have to wait 45 days from requesting payment to receive my rightfully earned dollars. Not too much of an incentive to keep trying to hit that high payout when I have to wait such a long time to utilize it.
Oh, and that promise of up to $100 that lured me in? Not so, at least currently. I saw a newsletter after I signed up (and paid) to the site that the owner submitted, stating that until further notice all articles will only be receiving $10 for their front page articles. Had I known that, I would not have bothered to sign up. That is my fault however, for not being thorough and doing my research.
So now I make money how I can, and am trying to get my money back. I don’t think I’ll pay a membership fee next year, because even if I hit the front page every day with my efforts I make much more from Associated Content and don’t have to wait a month and a half to get my money.
I’m just trying to make the best of the situation I allowed myself to get into with Fortitude, and have learned my lesson well. Don’t get drawn into the promise of dollar signs, because you’re likely wasting your time, and don’t ever pay to work (or write for) someone.
