‘Natural History’ is the 8th episode of the 6th season for the CBS show ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ The episode originally aired on November 8th, 2010. There were several key storylines in this episode. The whole story takes place in a natural history museum. The angle between Ted and his protester rival Zoey continued. We meet Zoey’s husband, a wealthy man known as The Captain. He is high up in the Goliath National Bank world and is clearly full of himself. Much older than Zoey, Ted refers to her as a trophy wife after he is angered that she trashed him in an ad on the Crossword page in the newspaper. Zoey takes Ted in to a room full of bugs and opens up about being sad in her life. Ted sympathizes and says some negative things about Goliath. Of course, Zoey was tricking him. She recorded the whole conversation. Later in the episode, The Captain hears about it and tells Ted he can erase the tape. The Captain also says some negative things about Zoey. Ted says he can keep the tape and that he respects Zoey. She overhears the entire thing. At the end of the episode, Zoey says she erased the tape and that she will beat Ted fair and square. Afterward the two share a dance.
Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily debate about Marshall signing a contract with GNB. We are treated to some college flashbacks, including one in which a college aged Marshall appears as an exhibit labeled ‘Extinct.’ Marshall seems to be content with remaining at GNB but Lily fears he is forgetting his roots. In the end, she realizes that people change and that it doesn’t mean they are any worse. Marshall says he can work at GNB and use the money to spoil his family. Lily agrees with that. The last scene in the episode has Ted narrating that Marshall stayed on at GNB but that it wouldn’t last forever. We then see a seen of Marshall at his desk in the style of a museum exhibit. This time the plaque reads “Corporate Marshall – Extinct.”
The other angle involves Barney and Robin spending time breaking the ‘Do Not Touch’ rules at the museum. This starts out simple as they touch an Egyptian statue. But it turns crazy as they try to one up each other. Eventually Barney and Robin are caught by a security guard at the museum. While talking with the security guard, we find out that age 6 Barney was involved in vandalism at the museum in which he knocked down a blue whale statue. He also learns from the file the security guard has that the man he thought was his uncle was actually his father. He asks Robin not to tell anyone.
This was a solid episode of the show. The college flashbacks and the competition between Barney and Robin provide a good amount of laughs. Meanwhile, we see a human side to Zoey as she overhears The Captain. The moment between her and Ted suggests she isn’t going away any time soon. There is also some development in Barney’s quest to find his father. We also learn that the day at the museum was the last day Barney saw his father. Overall, this was a fun episode that advanced several key storylines.
