How much chocolate does the American adult eat per year? This came to my mind as I am chowing down on a Snickers, and I was betting that we eat pounds and pounds of the great chocolate every year. I know I do. So, how many pounds does the average American adult eat per year?
Holy smokes- the average American adult consumes 11.7 pounds of chocolate every year- that’s the weight of about 6 pairs of shoes! Ever since chocolate was first made in America in 1765 (in Dorchester, Massachusetts), we as Americans consume chocolate in a crazy amount- but oddly enough, I thought it would be way more than 12 pounds. If I had to guess, I would have said at least 25.
We may consume a lot of chocolate, but it’s small pickings compared to Switzerland, which averages about double the amount of chocolate we eat. The average Swiss eats a staggering 22.36 pounds of chocolate per year, followed by Austria at 20.13 pounds, and Ireland, at 19.47 pounds per year, per person. It makes Americans look like we don’t even like chocolate.
The most popular form of chocolate in America is in the form of anything Hershey’s basically, and our favorite imported chocolate is Lindt, which, not surprisingly, hails from Switzerland. No wonder they eat so much chocolate themselves, they have some of the most popular chocolate in the world!
So the next time you reach for a chocolate snack, just know you’re not alone, and you can relax in knowing that while you may eat nearly 12 pounds of chocolate yearly, at least it’s not 22 pounds- strange, though, that on average we consume about a pound of chocolate a month as American adults. No wonder we are an expanding nation. It could be worse, though- if I can choose to eat 12 pounds of anything in a year, I’d rather it be chocolate. And that 12 pound number isn’t so bad; according to the FDA, the average American adult also eats over 100 pounds of fruit each year as well. In my opinion, it all balances out.
