I’m sure that most Americans have, at some point, been convinced that something they owned was valuable. A good many of them probably tried to sell their prized possession in order to make a few bucks. It is then when they find out that what they have isn’t as valuable as they thought it was. These days there is only one place that gauges the true value of items: Ebay.
Up until the late 1990s, when Ebay stepped foot into the mainstream, pricing standards of all items were determined by both pricing guides and the buyer’s desire to own the product. While today’s prices are still effected by the buyer’s desire, they have moved away from influence of pricing guides, websites, antique shops, and non-internet based auctions.
Currently, the most accurate way to find out how much things are worth is to search the completed listings on Ebay. This can be done by using the “Advanced Search” feature on Ebay’s website and checking the “Completed Listings” box before running the search. Doing this will allow you to see the prices of which certain types of items in various conditions have sold for. Take note though, you must be a registered Ebay member to run a completed listings search.
What does this mean for you?
Just because Ebay sets the standards doesn’t mean that everyone is going to follow them. There are still many people that, believe it or not, don’t like to use the internet. You must use this to your advantage. Flea markets and yard sales are where the money is at. If you search the completed Ebay listings and know what items are worth you will have an advantage over other people. Many people at flea markets and yard sales don’t know what their stuff is worth because they just want to get rid of it! If you really want to improve your odds of finding cheap valuables at yard sales you must invest in a device with high speed mobile internet capabilities such as an Iphone, Android, or one of many other devices. This way you can search Ebay’s completed listings while you are at the yard sale or flea market. It’s almost like playing dirty, but don’t feel too bad.
So go on, get out there, and make some money!
