Children learn from watching and copying what their parents do. It is more important than ever that parents learn to teach their children to be health conscious at an early age. Children can learn to eat the right foods and to understand the importance of eating healthy foods and getting exercise as young as possible. It is possible to teach your children to understand healthy habits and to practice them by the time they reach five years old.
How to teach your child to be health conscious by the age of five:
Start Young- The younger your children are when you start to teach them about healthy foods, the younger they will be when they understand what a healthy lifestyle is. Children have amazing minds trap things that it sees and hears. Your child can only learn what he/she is taught. If you teach him/her that eating at McDonald’s on a regular basis is okay, that is the perception your child grows up with. The only way to turn that around is for the child to reprogram him/herself when he/she gets older and decides to do it on his/her own. That could happen but it is a rare instance. Start teaching your child about good health habits from the time that he/she is little and he/she will never know that there is anything but a healthy lifestyle.
Serve Healthy Foods- Serve your children healthy foods. When they are old enough to talk, they are old enough to start learning why those foods are healthy for them and that they are good foods to eat. For instance, learn about how carrots help eyesight so eyes stay healthy. The more your child knows about how the foods help him/her, the more understanding he/she has and the more likely he/she will continue to eat healthy foods when you aren’t around. By the time a child is age 5, he/she will be able to recite back to you the things that he/she has learned about healthy eating. This is an age that is perfect for driving home the essence of a healthy lifestyle for your children. If you wait beyond the age of five to begin teaching your child about good nutrition and health habits, it becomes too late to change bad habits that may have already formed.
Limit Use of Technology- There is nothing wrong with children learning about technology. Computers and other technologically based equipment will be essential things the child will need to learn for his/her future. It isn’t good if that is all your child is doing. Teaching your child throughout his/her life about exercise as being part of a healthy lifestyle will ensure that by the age of 5, he/she will have a good basis in knowing the importance of exercise. Encourage your children to get out and play every day. Get a workout routine that works for small children and do it with your child. This will give them the start in life that they need to know how to live a healthy lifestyle and for them to require it for themselves as they age.
Communication- Talking with your child along with being a good example and living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to educate your child on the importance of good nutrition and health habits from the time your children are small. Communication and telling your children important information about being health conscious is key to educating them as well as all the actions you can take. If a person doesn’t understand the reasons they are doing something, there is very little reason that they would care to continue the behavior. Health, like everything else, is taught, not inbred. If you want your children to live healthy lifestyles, teach them how by the time they are five years old.
Children can learn how to be health consciousness by the time they are five years old. They learn it if you teach it. Talking to your children, serving healthy foods and learning how to exercise will all promote a healthy lifestyle and an understanding of it by the time a child turns five years old. Once they have learned it and practiced it most of their lives, they will continue it throughout their lives giving them a much better chance at a happy and healthy life for many years to come.
