Here are the basic rules that apply to any game. Follow these and you can’t go wrong. You too can be good at video games.
1. Know your character
This is the most important part of gaming. Know what you can do, and don’t be afraid to use everything you have. Look up characters similar to yours to see what else you can do. Know what skills and abilities are available to you, and how they can be used to your advantage.
2. Know your play style
Everyone plays differently. Know what you are best at, and what you need to improve. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses as a gamer will not only help you pick games you will be good at, but it will help you to avoid or overcome your biggest weaknesses.
3. Know your opponent
If you know, extensively, what you are going up against then you will know how to defeat it. If you find you are having trouble beating one type of character or monster learn more about it. Perhaps there are some tricks that take advantage of a weakness you were unaware of before.
4. Stay up to date
Keep up with the latest trends and improvements in the game you are playing. This will keep you from being surprised by someone who is more familiar with new advances. Public Testing Realms and BETA’s are a great way to stay ahead. Website forums can also be very helpful in keeping you on top of new advances.
5. Try new things
Don’t get stuck doing the same thing over and over because it has always worked before. Try out new features, new character builds, and new ways of doing things. You may be pleasantly surprised.
6. Be nice
Sometimes it is all about having friends in the right places. If you are nice to everyone you are bound to end up with an army of people behind you when you need help.
7. Don’t buy things you don’t need
This is a common downfall among pack rats like me. Don’t buy things just for fun or hold
onto things you will never use. This is a waste of money and space that could be used in a better way.
8. Practice, Practice, Practice
No one is good at every game without practice. Try things out for yourself. The more you play the better you will be.
9. Know when to run away
Some fights you can’t win. Don’t get in over your head. Know when to call it quits, stop, and regroup later.
10. Heal early, Save often
This will save you from getting set back two hours just from a minor mistake. Keep yourself healed, and save your game whenever you do anything you don’t wish to have to repeat, and maybe a couple extra times just for good measure.
11. Don’t brag
Bragging is a good way to mark yourself as a target for take down. Unless you are extremely confidant of your abilities, don’t brag.
12. Don’t whine
There is no easier way to look like a noob then to whine about every death. Get over it, then get even.
13. Don’t cheat
Hacking and using glitches to give yourself an advantage are tactics used only by gamers that cannot play the game well on their own.
Don’t expect your teammates to read your mind. Even things that go without saying, sometimes need to be said more than you realize.
15. Don’t speak in unreadable text
Examples include (but aren’t limited to): TaLkInG LiKe ThIs, orlikethis, or.like.this., or using text speech such as,” r u n or out?” and ” I M a 1337 MONster” If someone does not know what you are saying you will be ignored.
16. It’s just a game
This is becoming more and more easily forgotten as games get more realistic. Don’t ever forget that it’s only a game and has little if no bearing on the rest of life. Chill.
