When a person pursues a career, sport, or any other hobby, the desire to be great (if not the best) usually becomes a goal. Some may see this goal as a must, while others will not. But no matter the case, the same idea of being great is a primary motivator.
Many believe that with time, one will gradually become great at everything they do. That is true to an extent, but such success will not come naturally. Specific thoughts and actions must be accepted and practiced first. Only after both have been implemented, does it become possible.
Life is like a jig-saw puzzle; it must be solved piece-by-piece
Since everything you do cannot be limited, it can be viewed as a jig-saw puzzle that can have varying amounts of pieces (which represent different skills). And just like a puzzle must be solved piece-by-piece, life must be taken step-by-step.
Instead of solving a puzzle a dozen pieces at a time – which is impossible for a human – one or two pieces should be focused on. To be great at everything you do, patience must settle in. The puzzle (life) will eventually be solved, but it if it is rushed, pieces will be placed incorrectly.
The obsession to be great at everything you do
Once a person has chosen a couple areas to focus on, they must then become obsessed to be great at them. Obsession may sound exhaustive, however if one is passionate about what they do, then obsession will become a part of life.
Bruce Lee is well known for his great martial art ability. Having the most destructive side kick and the quickest punches, Bruce Lee trained for hours each and every day, always finding ways to improve his physical ability. He formed his own fighting style known as Jeet Kune Do; the art of the intercepting fist. And as he proves, one cannot be somewhat obsessed to be great, but rather completely immersed.
This same concept is also represented in others such as Albert Einstein, Usain Bolt, and Garry Kasparov. Every one of these profound achievers became fixated in being the best. Math and Physics became Einstein’s life, and by age 15, he had written a book on the Theory of Relativity. Usain Bolt trained for years and finally set the 100m dash world record in 2009. Garry Kasparov spent hours a day reviewing chess matches, and was soon titled the youngest World Chess Champion in history.
Challenging practice to be great at everything
In order for any type of improvement to occur, the level of training must also increase. However, the intensity should not be anything the mind or body can’t handle. The difficulty should only be increased if an individual has mastered the level underneath it. Training is similar to math. First simple addition and subtraction are learned, then multiplication, division, fractions, etc. An individual is sure to fail if they attempt to learn integral calculus after basic math. The same goes for any other drastic jump.
Also, to be exceptional, each physical action or mental thought must be carefully processed. By taking the time to notice every movement or idea, mistakes can be easily drawn upon. And after they have been noticed, then they can be improved to near perfection. Through this routine of separating excellent from poor quality, the mind will slowly be strengthened as well.
Eliminating bad habits to be great at everything you do
When a new skill or lesson is being taught, the mind may pick up bad habits. This will then lead to the opposite of being great at everything. And in order to prevent this, one must have an open mind to adjust. Although the bad habit may seem correct, it is not, and will have to be fixed.
Ignorance is not part of being great at everything you do. Rather, awareness is. Instead of pushing others away for their suggestion, take a moment to consider them. Place their ideas into a working schedule, and if they are not effective, then they can be thrown aside. One must never be afraid to try novel things. After all, that is what being great is about.
Moving on and expanding knowledge
Once one category of someone’s life has been mastered, then others can join the cycle. With innovative perceptions always being learned, a person will become well-rounded. This will then make it easier for the individual to acquire more information. As in school, every subject can lead to benefits. With the brain always being challenged, it will adapt to a high-level of learning.
Continuing, a great amount of time is spent to be the best in any given area. To ensure that vital information isn’t lost, a quick review is necessary every month or two. Whether it is muscle or cognitive memory, repetition will strengthen or maintain it. Being great at everything you do is not a simple task. It is the most demanding and will require a brimming amount of dedication.
