During the holiday season the word “grateful” is often used more as we try to talk each other, as well as ourselves into being more thankful for our lot in life. I found this very topic covered in the Tuesday, November 23rd 2010 Personal Journal section of the Wall Street Journal by Melinda Beck. Ways to be healthier in general can begin first with gratitude as it sets up a positive mind set for real life change to take hold.
I have to agree with this theory of becoming healthier with gratefulness and thankfulness, because I know when I practice those principals in my own life my own living experience is just a more positive one in many ways. Here’s a few of the upsides that the Wall Street Journal article states.
More Energy For Life
Sustaining an attitude of gratitude is known to maintain a more positive psychological, physical, and emotional state of well being. Physically, it’s been shown that adults with more of a gratefulness about them find themselves with more energy, more of a social life, and more happiness generally according to studies within the last decade, as stated by this Wall Street Journal article.
It goes on to say that even adolescents and children that possess are more grateful attitude tend to have better grades, and are less materialistic than those who are less so. It also states that those kids have higher goals set, are less depressed in general and complain less of aches and pains.
A lot of this stuff is learned by us way back in kindergarten or is something one of our old and wise grandparents preached to us, but there is evidence that backs these findings up, explains Jeffrey J. Froh, assistant Professor of psychology at the University of California-Davis and a crusader for the research done on this subject of gratitude. He adds that “with the realization that one has benefited, comes the awareness of the need to reciprocate.”
As someone who practices the twelve steps, I can say that a large part of those steps is about practicing gratitude in your living and thought experience. It is a powerful tool in assisting people to regain a more positive way of thinking. As a result of that change manifesting, their moods will change and therefore their lives. It’s an empowering way to help yourself.
Being healthier in mind, body and spirit is first preceded by healthy thought. Once healthy thought is mastered you’ll have found out how to be healthier in general. So, not only are we what we eat, we are what we think too!
