College can be an exciting time. College can also be a scary time being around new people. Living conditions change when you go to college. College often means lots of people living in close proximity, less then sanitary living conditions, and no one to take care of you if you get sick. Being in an environment that is more likely to make you sick is not good when you are also alone for the first time with no one to nurse you back to health and lots of work to do. The added stress of living in a new place and the stress of school weakens the immune system too. College does not have to be as dangerous a place as it is if you take the proper precautions. Even living in dorms you can still have healthy living if you follow these tips to keep you healthy. Educate yourself about healthy living before you begin your education and you will have a much better college experience.
Lets face it a college dorm is not the most sanitary place especially if you are a young guy. You can make sure you follow healthy living practices to keep yourself safe. The showers are a breeding ground for germs. When you use the showers you should not go barefoot but wear some kind of slipper or water shoe.
Many college students do not clean their dorms. If you leave half eaten pizza on the ground then you are letting your dorm become a breeding ground for disease. Its ok to party on the weekend at college but you should make sure to clean up after the party so you have a healthy living space.
Germs are a major cause of diseases. You can eliminate germs in a couple of ways. The first way to eliminate germs is to wash your hands under warm water. Besides washing your hands you can also purchase a UV sanitizer wand. UV wands do not kill bacteria they make it so the bacteria can not reproduce. With so many kids in such a small place dorms are breeding grounds for germs so make sure you take proper precautions.
Some people do not think it is good to have shots but if you are in an environment like school that may not be the healthiest place then you should get shots. Some shots that you may want to get either before or while at school include the flu shot, and the H1N1 shot. If you can get the shots before leaving for school that is a good idea because there is a small chance you may get sick from the shots and you can be at home sick instead of at school.
Abstinence is the only sure way to avoid pregnancy and STD’s. However many kids see college as a chance to explore their sexuality. If you are going to be sexually active in college you should at least practice safe sex. Using condoms is a must as it will protect you from unwanted pregnancy but also can protect you from STD’s.
These tips can help you not only in college as you pursue your education but for the rest of your life. Getting proper education about health is an important step to healthy living. While college can be a breeding ground for all kinds of germs if you take the proper precautions your college life can be disease free. If only it would be stress free.
