Whether it is her first pageant or her thirty-first, choosing a pageant dress for your little girl is an important part of the pageant process. If your daughter wants to become active in pageants, you will want to develop a mental checklist to help you both choose just the right dress for the occasion. Start your search with plenty of time until the pageant; finding the perfect pageant dress can take some time.
Keep in mind your daughter’s age. Classic lines flatter any figure style, even at a young age. Choosing an age-appropriate dress ensures that the judges are not distracted from what really matters-your daughter’s personality and ability to express herself. Be sure the dress fits properly when sitting and standing. If you are having the dress made for your daughter, be sure to triple check all measurements.
Fabric choice is equally important. If you choose a stiff fabric, no matter how pretty it is, your daughter will feel, look and act uncomfortable. This shows her in an unflattering light, which is not what you want during a pageant. Make sure the fabric looks and feels comfortable before you decide on a dress.
Color is an important way to help your daughter stand out from the other competitors. There are no limits to the colors available in girls’ pageant dresses, but you want the color you choose to be the most flattering color possible for your daughter’s coloring. Fair girls can look smashing in jewel tones, and most girls love what pastels do for them. Pink may be a popular color for the other girls in the pageant, however, so you may want to choose another color to avoid blending in to the crowd. Seasonal colors can be an excellent choice depending on when the pageant is being held.
If you decide to opt for embroidery or embellishments, keep them suitable for your daughter’s age group. While beautiful, too many embellishments can overpower a girl. As with the style of the pageant dress, you want the attention to be on your daughter’s personality and confidence.
Your daughter’s shoes should accent the dress well, but they too should not be uncomfortable or inappropriate for her age. High heels are not necessary, and can become a hazard for young girls on the stage. Mary Janes or other low-heeled girls’ shoes are perfectly fine, and can be purchased in many different colors to match your perfect pageant dress.
Other accessories finish off the look like a bow on a package. As with her entire look, you want your daughter to look her age as well as beautiful. Removable accessories such as shawls or boas may be the perfect way to accent a particular dress, but they can be easily lost. They can also come across looking fussy or be difficult for your daughter to keep in place on her own. Keep things simple, with just a few accents here and there to draw the eye.
Once you’ve made your final decision and the perfect pageant dress has arrived for your daughter’s big day, make sure she tries it on with all of the accessories you’ve chosen together. Check to be certain she can move freely in the dress and that everything works together well. If you’ve started the process with enough time to spare, you should have plenty of leeway in case something turned out differently than expected.
