When caring for young children, one of the challenges is being able to still get all of your cleaning done, and making sure the kids are okay. Finding the time, and the energy can be one of the biggest challenges. Below are some simple ideas on how you can care for very young children in your home, and still get the cleaning done.
It takes just five minutes
You may not have an entire hour to spend cleaning the house when you are babysitting, but five minute clean up’s are really a great way to keep your home looking good. I have found that cleaning up food items as you go is really the first step to keeping your home clean. If you are watching young babies, you can put them in their play pen for a few minutes after feeding them. Then you can clean up the dishes, and throw the garbage away. Even after feeding the baby, while they are still in their high chair you can sweep, and mop the floor and wipe down the counters. If you are watching more than one child, it is a good idea to give the older kids some safe activities, and you can pick up and clean up in between feedings. You will be surprised at how much cleaner your home will be, by just taking five minutes to tidy up just one area of the home.
Nap time is a great cleaning time
Most young children take naps. If you don’t put the kids down for a nap, now would really be a good time to start. While the kids are sleeping you will want to fight the urge to nap along with them. During nap time you can get a load of laundry done, the dishes finishes and at least one room dusted. By taking the time to clean while the kids are napping you will have less to do at the end of the day.
Give the kids chores
If the kids are old enough to walk they can help put their toys away, and even dust. Just because a child is only four years old, does not mean they are not able to do anything around the house. You can have them pick up their toys and put them away when they are done with them. I have also found it easier to limit the amount of times the kids are able to play with at one time. When they are finished playing with one toy they can put the rest of the toys away. This way at the end of the day you will have less to put away and clean up.
