Do you have a wife who is an alcoholic? Do you find it difficult to live a happy life with your wife’s drunken rages and unpredictable behavior? If so don’t delay getting help. To help understand how you can cope with your wife’s alcohol addiction and how you can get professional help, I have interviewed licensed therapist and published author Sherry Gaba, LCSW.
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
“My name is Sherry Gaba, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Life Coach, and Recovery Coach specializing in addictions, depression, trauma, anxiety, and helping clients find their life purpose. I am also the Life Coach on Celebrity Rehab on VH1 and the author of ‘The Law of Sobriety: Attracting Positive Energy for a Powerful Recovery'”
What type of impact can a wife’s alcohol addiction have on her husband?
“It becomes difficult in many areas. If the wife is also a mother, he becomes responsible for care giving and his career. He can become co-dependent making her his primary focus neglecting other areas of his life i.e. career, children, family, and friends. He may enable her disease and not get her the help she needs as she continues to reach a low bottom that can ultimately end in death.”
How can a husband cope with his wife’s alcohol addiction?
“The best way to cope is to go to Alanon meetings where you can get the support you need to support her recovery but not enable the disease. It is all about detaching with love by getting her the proper help through a counselor, psychiatrist, rehab, out patient rehab and 12 step meetings.”
What last advice would you like to give to a husband who is coping with his wife’s alcohol addiction?
“Get help immediately. Read about woman and alcoholism. Get out of denial. Make sure the children are kept safe.”
