“Detox” is a buzzword frequently heard around the health food store natural juice machine. Most allopathic doctors say that there are only a couple of ways to get toxins out of your body and they are chelation and dialysis. Chelation is a hospital procedure that only works with heavy metals. And of course, dialysis is used with patients who have kidney failure.
The kidneys are the body’s natural filtration system. They regulate blood pressure, remove excess fluid, and remove minerals like phosphorus and potassium. They also remove other bodily wastes. Dialysis removes some of these wastes and fluid by putting a patient’s blood through a hepa filter. The liver also removes and metabolizes substances like alcohol and prescription medications.
But a lot of people think that the body’s natural processes to remove waste are not enough. They believe that there are natural remedies that can aid the body’s natural processes to remove the toxins. They believe that most of the toxins come from our polluted environment and are responsible for most of our ills.
According to the Healthy Planet Magazine: “What is detoxing? It involves cleansing mainly the liver, colon, bladder, and lungs. These are the primary organs of elimination but definitely not the only ones.”
According to the magazine, detoxing is really just a form of fasting and avoiding the types of food that most naturalists think accumulate toxins in the body. These include white bread, meat, sugar, and foods that lack nutritional value like junk foods. Some also believe that you need to take blessed thistle, get a colonic regularly, and use bentonite clay.
Why do people need to detox? According to some holistic practitioners, your internal organs need time to rest just like you do. If you are constantly bombarding the body with toxins from the environment, the organs in your body that eliminate waste can’t keep up and the toxins accumulate, causing illness. It’s sort of like if you deprive your brain of sleep. That wouldn’t be very healthy for your body.
Some experts recommend that you detox at the change of seasons. At the equinoxes are good times. There may even be a spiritual quality to getting rid of the toxins and fasting at those times of year. Of course, the winter equinox falls right at Christmas, a time of excess for most of us. Maybe you can wait until the day after. That’s when your body will need it most anyway.
