Millions of Americans have ties to Mexico. Even from the US, dialing Mexico requires access to the international phone network. Callers who wish to dial Mexico must first determine the correct exit code for the country from which they are placing the call. After using the exit code to establish a connection to the international network, the caller must then use a special Mexico country code to connect to the Mexican phone system. Those who use the correct dialing codes in the correct format can connect to both Mexican landlines and cell phones.
A large number of calls made to Mexico originate in the US. When you dial Mexico from the States, dial “011” to establish an international connection. This “011” number is an exit code. However, if you are calling from a different country, you must use that country’s exit code. For example, calling from Spain to Mexico requires the “00” exit code. If you are not familiar with your country’s exit code or will be traveling and need access to multiple exit codes, refer to the codes list on the HowToCallAbroad website (see Sources). Of course, it is convenient to have a paper copy of these exit codes in the event you plan to travel in other countries.
All callers must then dial “52” after the exit code of the country in which the call is being made. This “52” code is the country code used to dial Mexico. All countries have their own country code, and that code does not change regardless of the origin of the phone call.
When combining Steps 1 and 2, a call from the US would go as such: 011-52. From Spain, the call would start like this: 00-52. This two-step code system always starts the sequence for making an international phone call.
The last step is to enter the Mexico area code and phone number. The area code and phone number in Mexico have a total of 10 digits. However, note that Mexico has a two-digit trunk code of “01.” This trunk code is like the “1” used in the US. It is not applicable in international dialing procedures and should be excluded when dialing Mexico from another country.
Warning: There is a special procedure for dialing cell phones in Mexico. Unlike most countries, cell phones have one of the standard area codes. When you dial a Mexico cell phone, use the following formula:
exit code + country code (52 in all cases) + 1 + area code and cell-phone number
