This article will walk you through how to do long division. Why should I care about this? Don’t I already own a calculator or at least the long division app for my iPhone? Sure you do. But your brain is a muscle that, if not exercised, will atrophy, and more importantly, you won’t be able to have number sense to understand complex math.
For middle schoolers, it is expected that you know this. However, how many really do? And even if you do know how, can you still do it?
Number sense is something that is not stressed today, which is probably the reason why people “hate” math. Like any language, if you don’t understand the basics, you sure aren’t going to understand Calculus (much less finance, statistics, etc.). I should say that the material is certainly taught, but it is never practiced enough.
Refer to this pdf link that I wrote. It includes division signs and other graphics I could not include here.
With these steps, you should be well on your way to figuring it all out. If you Google some “long division worksheets” you will be able to also get some practice.
