Nice engagement rings are expensive, but you don’t have to break the bank to get your girl the ring of her dreams that she’ll love to flaunt for everyone to see. All it takes is a little creativity, and you can find a genuine diamond ring that will please your girl and make sure she’ll say “YES!”
To find an affordable ring, check out estate sales in your area. Often, estate sales will sell antique diamond rings that Grandma left behind, and you can get the real thing that is unique and beautiful for cheap. Estate sales in your area are usually found in your local paper and you can ask around- almost anyone knows somebody who is wanting to get rid of a ring that is genuine for less, especially in this economy.
Check out craigslist in your area as well. Look at rings with pictures and descriptions, and meet potential sellers at a jewelry store of your choosing to check the authenticity of the ring prior to buying it. Just be sure to have cash on hand if you want to buy, as most sellers on craigslist will take cash only. Also, having cash allows you to make an offer- who will say no to a bundle of the green stuff?
eBay is another option, but beware. Since you can’t check the authenticity of the ring until you receive it, you have to make sure you are buying the real thing prior to purchase so you don’t have a cubic zirconia on your hands. While this is rare, since most eBay sellers want that awesome reputation, buying a ring without physically seeing it can be a gamble. If you are buying a ring off eBay, check the seller’s ratings and try to stick with actual jewelers selling a ring rather than just people selling their own rings, or buy from sellers near you so perhaps you can see the ring prior to bidding (not likely tho- a lot of sellers won’t do this). But it’s worth a shot.
Buy online. There are lots of discount jewelers online that you can get rings “wholesale” from or at least on discount. Check the BBB rating before purchasing, and don’t make the mistake that the price of the ring you want to buy includes the center diamond. Often you have to purchase that separately, so only search for “pre-set” rings.
Check out Amazon.com for rings. You can get reviews on the ring you’re thinking about, and it’s a reputable site with a surprising amount of ring options.
Check your local paper for used engagement rings for sale. You just may find the one made just for your girl.
Your local jeweler may have rings surprisingly within budget. They want their commission, so if you go in with a thousand dollar budget, they will work their best to get you the ring you want. Even Fred Meyer and Sam’s Club have really impressive rings within a small budget.
Don’t rule out the heirloom rings in your family. Grandma may have a ring she hopes to put on another young lady’s finger one day. Announce to your family that you want to propose, and the most beautiful ring you’ve ever seen may be perfect for the occasion. They may also be willing to help you purchase a ring. My brother’s engagement ring for his wife was actually my father’s wedding gift for my brother. You may be able to get the perfect engagement ring without even paying for it.
Don’t sweat the size of the diamond or the the fact that you can’t buy a giant rock. If she loves you, you could propose with an onion ring and she’d be thrilled. While you may want to buy her the diamond of her dreams, the reality is that she’d only hear the proposal and the ring is just a bonus. Don’t worry about it. Do your best and she’ll be happy with whatever you present her with, because all she wants to really hear is that you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her.
