The majority of DVDs used in homes have a designation on the surface of the DVD that states their format. Examples include DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM. Compatibility issues arise with the DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. Technology has made great strides with the DVD+R and DVD+RW to eliminate compatibility issues. A DVD identifier software is needed to determine the format of a DVD if it is not written on the surface. DVD identifier software is free and located on the Internet.
