Delaware has many opportunities for commercial drivers to find work as a truck, bus or other operator of large vehicles. The state is very similar to other states in that prospective commercial drivers must first get a license to drive and operate a commercial vehicle. The Delaware DMV provides these commercial licenses. Applicants must first study for and take a CDL written test. They can then train on actual vehicles in preparation for the skills/driving test. Those who pass both the written and skills test can get a Delaware CDL license.
Use the Delaware CDL manual to prepare for the written CDL knowledge exam. You may get a copy of the official manual from your local Delaware DMV or online at Dmv.de.gov/forms/driver_serv_forms/pdfs/dr_frm_cdlmanual_revised_050907.pdf. The “Delaware Commercial Driver License Manual” has several sections designed to prepare you for the various parts of the CDL exam.
The standard driver’s license test generally requires you to study an entire manual. The CDL manual is different in that there are basic parts that all commercial drivers must know plus separate endorsement tests. An endorsement is a special classification for certain types of vehicles. For example, if you want to operate a truck with air brakes, then you must get that endorsement. You should have some idea about what job you want and study accordingly. If you are not sure, then study the whole manual and take all endorsement exams along with the standard portions of the CDL test.
Note that you may also find several online CDL study guides or practice questions. For example, CristCDL has some free CDL practice tests online for your convenience. You can also use a search engine to find additional CDL study materials.
Take the knowledge test. If you pass, then you can get a Delaware CDL permit. This permit is a learner’s permit that allows you to practice your driving and safety checks on actual commercial vehicles.
Get Delaware CDL training. You may look for a truck driving school in your area with the Professional Truck Driver Institute school directory at Ptdi.org/schools/schools.aspx. The Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown has a certified training course. If you cannot attend that course, you have other possible options, such as an employer-sponsored program. Just make sure you get recommendations from others before participating in any CDL training program in Delaware or any other state.
Schedule your CDL skills test at the local Delaware DMV. You generally need to provide your own vehicle for this portion of the testing. Truck driving schools or employers usually provide a truck for this purpose. Consult with them or your local school district if testing to be a school bus driver.
Take your skills test. If you pass, then you can obtain a Delaware CDL license. Try to be ready for this test, as it can obviously be a real hassle dealing with having to take this part of the test again. Make sure you review your CDL manual before taking this part of the test, as well.
Note: You must pass a medical exam to operate a vehicle as a commercial driver. For hazardous materials, you must also pass a criminal background check. Ask the local Delaware DMV for the required documentation and paperwork for these CDL requirements.
