The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) runs the commercial driver’s license program for the state. Drivers of big rigs, buses and other large vehicles must generally take a knowledge test and a separate skills test to get a Rhode Island CDL license. The DMV provides a manual/study guide to assist applicants in preparing for the exams. After passing the knowledge test, applicants may get a CDL permit to train on commercial motor vehicles. They can then train and prepare for the skills test. Applicants can finally get a CDL license by passing the skills test through the local Rhode Island DMV.
Go to an Oregon DMV office to get the “Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles Commercial Driver License Manual.” You can also access the Rhode Island CDL manual online at Dmv.ri.gov/documents/manuals/CDL_Manual.pdf.
Get a medical exam form at the DMV or download it online at Fmcsa.dot.gov/documents/forms/649f.pdf. You will need to pass a physical fitness exam to get your commercial driver’s license. Take the medical card/certificate with you when you apply for your CDL license.
Use the Rhode Island CDL manual and related online study materials to prepare for the Rhode Island CDL test. You can find other study guides or practice questions online by searching for “Rhode Island CDL practice test” or “Rhode Island CDL study guide” in a search engine.
You are only required to study the general portions plus endorsement portions for the vehicles/cargo applicable to your personal situation. If you do not know what kind of job you will have after getting your commercial driver’s license, then you can study for all endorsements. The HAZMAT (hazardous materials) endorsement also requires to pass a criminal background check. Apply at Hazprints.com.
Take the CDL knowledge test at the DMV. You can then receive a Rhode Island CDL permit when you pass the test. The learner’s permit allows you to drive commercial vehicles under the supervision of a driver licensed with a CDL.
Get Rhode island CDL training. In addition to bus training from Rhode Island school districts or private companies like Greyhound, you can also opt to attend truck driver training school. The Professional Truck Driver Institute certifies multiple Northeast-area CDL school programs. Find schools at ptdi.org/schools/schools.aspx.
Complete your skills test through the DMV. The general process is that you get a vehicle for testing from a rental agency, school or employer. You then take that and a licensed driver with you to the skills test. You will receive your Rhode Island CDL license upon successful completion of the CDL skills exam.
