Working as a server in room service at most places gives you a set amount of gratuity. It is usually based on a percentage of the order price. There is often a space for guests to write in additional tips. If you are looking to increase the amount of additional tips follow these guidelines to see a little more money each day. Making more tips in room service is easy as you get what you put into the job every shift.
Increasing your room service tips: Preparation
After taking the order decide whether to use a tray or a table. The general rule is two or less entrees on a tray. You should avoid stacking a tray three high with plates. If the order is two high but you also have a wine bucket it is probably better to set up a table. Also consider the price of the order in setting up for the patron. If a hotel guest orders a side salad, cup of soup, and a bottle of Dom Perignon it is best to set up a nice table.
As you are setting up the order try to think of condiments that go with the meal. Keep in mind that people from other countries use different condiments then Americans. A burger should have ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. Cut up lime for sparkling water and lemon to go with still water. Bring butter and bread or crackers with soup and salad. Being very detail orientated will help you get better tips in room service.
Bring water with every order no matter how small. I have had room service at other branches of my hotel chain and was not brought water with my breakfast so had to choke it down. Guests really appreciate not having to ask for water when they order.
Increasing your room service tips: Setting up the room
It is very important to judge the guests mood and activity level when you enter their room. If you have a business person on a conference call try not to talk or if you have to speak use low tones. Often these orders are simply drop-offs. I have noticed they tend to tip more if you just leave the food and go away. There are some occasions in which it is acceptable to set it up in a quick fashion if the guest indicates their desire.
Also watch out for items on the floor. Guests are infamous for leaving child toys, socks, and laptop cords around for you to trip on. You definitely don’t want a spill in the guests room and have to call housekeeping. Some guests are unforgiving and will then want to change their room. You are sure to get no extra tip this way.
Increasing your room service tips: Delivering a Tray
Set a cloth napkin catercorner on the desk or table with half draping off the surface. Place food items up in classic restaurant style. Drinks above food dishes and to the right a bit and condiments upper left. I like to separate the silverware placing the forks on the left of the plate and knives and spoon on right of dish. It shows to the guest you care about their meal. Offer to open and pour out all drinks. Place the tray out of the way but still accessible to the guest. Lift food covers off and introduce the food to the guest. Leave hot items covered but take lids from cold items with you as you leave. Remember to remove drink covers, wine and champagne foil and any plastic wrap used to cover food. It is a courtesy to the guest not to leave this garbage in their room.
Increasing your room service tips: Delivering a table
Try to set up the table between two chairs in the room if possible. I sometimes will set it up between two beds if the guests seem to be lounging on them. Open the flaps on both sides to make the table bigger and give the guest leg room. Place items both guests will be eating in the middle and entrees on each side. Make sure everything guests will need is within comfortable reach.
