When you cook with fish, especially frying or broiling your favorite seafood, it can leave an oily fishy odor in your kitchen that can linger for days. While the scent is less than appetizing the the next day, you can get rid of these stubborn cooking odors from your home quickly.
You can use white vinegar or lemon juice to get rid of fishy odors and that fried oil smell that is always an unwelcome guest after cooking. While you’re cooking your food, leave a small bowl or cup full of white vinegar near the stove or by the burners to help absorb the smells while they are arising. To eradicate fishy odors after cooking, boil a pan of water with a few teaspoons of lemon juice (or if you have fresh lemons from after dinner cut the lemons into quarters and add to the pan of water) and allow the brew to boil for a half hour or so to eliminate the stench.
Prior to frying, if you take thinly sliced apples and apply them to your frying grease for a few minutes, you can keep the oil smells to a minimum without adding an apple taste to your fried foods. Just make sure to remove the apple slices before frying your dinner and throw them away.
You can also boil orange peels, grapefruit peels, or lemon peels after cooking to get rid of frying odors, and while broiling fish, use tin foil that can be easily tossed in the outside garbage to get rid of the strong odors right away. For a homey fragrance, add a teaspoon of cinnamon to compliment the citrus scent and your kitchen will smell more like a baking pie than a fish fest.
The acids in the citrus fruits and in the white vinegar help to soak up the odors much like baking soda does in your fridge. On that note, make sure you have baking soda in your refrigerator to keep your leftover fish from stinking up your other foods.
Quick and simple methods for eradicating fishy odors from your kitchen while cooking.
