Fruit flies are a common household annoyance. No one wants to have these little flies flying all over their house. Fruit flies can lay up around 500 eggs a day and your house can quickly become a breeding ground. Here are some tips on how to get rid of fruit flies in your home…
Find The Source
The first thing you need to do is find what is attracting the fruit flies. It is best not to leave any food out. Keep the foods that you can in the refrigerator and keep the others in a bag or container.
Vinegar and Soap
This method worked with me when we had a fruit fly problem in my house. You put some apple cider vinegar into a small bowl and you add a few drops of liquid soap. The apple cider vinegar will attract the fruit flies and the soap will get them stuck and kill them. You should leave a few bowls of this around areas where the most fruit flies are seen and within time you should see multiple fruit flies in the bowls.
Fruit And Bowl
You can also try placing a slice of fruit in a bowl, and then cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Once you have the plastic wrap on tightly, poke decent sized holes with something such as a fork. The fruit flies will be attracted to the smell of the fruit and will climb in through the holes to get the fruit. Once they are inside, the fruit flies will not be able to climb back out. You can then bring the bowl outside and release the fruit flies. Repeat until all fruit flies are gone.
Buy some fly strips. These are sticky strips that flies that fruit flies will get stuck to and they’ll end up dying. You may even catch some other flying bugs with this too.
Another method that works is setting a trap, such as some vinegar or a slice of fruit in a bowl. Wait until the fruit flies accumulate around the trap, then get the vacuum hose and suck them all up. This will kill the fruit flies, and you can easily repeat this again and again.
Another commonly used method to get rid of fruit flies is by putting a piece of fruit or apple cider vinegar into a jar or bottle and then placing a funnel inside. The fruit flies will, of course, be attracted to the smell, and will travel down the funnel and into the container. Once they are in there they will not be able to find their ways out. You can then go outside and release them. Repeat this as many times as it takes to get rid of the fruit fly problem.
You can also go out to the store and buy a pre-made fruit fly trap. You will most likely find these at home improvement stores or online.
