The State of Florida requires all acupuncturists to be licensed, and the Florida Department of Health has some strict rules and guidelines regarding basic acupuncture licensure requirements. Acupuncturists in Florida have to be nationally certified and can find the application and instructions for applying for a license on the Department of Health website.
Here’s what you need to know about getting your acupuncture license in the State of Florida:
Basic Acupuncture License Requirements in Florida
All acupuncturists must be at least 21 years of age and have passed the NCCAOM or a state examination approved by the board. The Florida Department of Health states the other following requirements:
– Completion of a National Certification Process
– Proof of English proficiency
– Proof of payment of fees
– Proof of Professional Liability Coverage
– Completion of an approved training program
– Completion of a two-hour Medical Errors course
The Florida Acupuncture License Application
The Department of Health Board of Acupuncture based in Tallahassee has created a formal application for licensure with instructions, and this can be downloaded here. As of August 2010, the application fee is $300 and the initial licensure fee is $200 to $400 depending on the when the license is being applied for. Applicants have to submit a passport-type photo with their application, along with exam results, a birth certificate or copy of a driver’s license, proof of financial responsibility, official transcripts from an acupuncture school, and verification of licensure from various licensing agencies. All applicants have to certify that they have professional liability coverage, or are otherwise exempt.
The Florida Department of Health typically sends a written application status notice or eligibility letter within 30 days of the date of receipt. They will not make a decision until all documentation has been sent and all fees have been paid, so it’s important to send everything together if you want to expedite the process. Transcripts do have to be sent directly from the school, and you may need some time to request proof of certification from certifying agencies including the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
The Florida Department of Health only accepts fee payments in the form of a cashier’s check or a money order. The organization does not offer online payment or online application processing at this time.
Acupuncture License Renewals
Licensed acupuncturists who want to renew their license will need to pay a fee that ranges from $355 to $1,005 depending on the status of the current license. The renewal process can take between two to three weeks, and renewals can be completed via FLHealthSource.com. The State of Florida also requires acupuncturists to complete at least 30 credit hours of continuing education every two years.
