Hiring a tile installer to grout your glass tile backsplash can prove to be costly, added to the cost of the tile and the grout. If you do the job yourself, you could save a lot of money. However, don’t grout glass tile on your own if you aren’t very handy with do-it-yourself home improvement tasks.
Step 1 to Grout Glass Tile: Choose your tile – Of course, this is the fun part. Having worked at a tile showroom, I was able to see just how many tile options (both glass and non-glass) were available. It’s a difficult decision, but you will likely end up with something really cool for your backsplash.
Step 2 to Grout Glass Tile: Choose a grout color – Before working in the design industry, I had no idea grout was available in a variety of colors. You will surely be able to find something to complement your tile, whether it is white, beige, or black – or something completely different.
Step 3 to Grout Glass Tile: Spread grout over tile – Grout should only be applied to clean, dry tiles. Spread it over the tiles in an upward motion at a 45-degree angle, using a back and forth motion. Let the grout set for fifteen minutes.
Step 4 to Grout Glass Tile: Remove excess grout – Once it has begun to cure, you will need to remove the excess grout. Use a dry paper towel to wipe the surface of all the tiles until it is clean. Work of the grout residue from the tiles; you will need lots of paper towel for this. If there is anything left on the glass once the grout has set, you will not be able to remove it.
Step 5 to Grout Glass Tile: Allow grout to cure – Now you will have to wait patiently; your grout will take around two to three days to cure. Keep family members away for a few days if you can; otherwise, just be careful not to apply excess pressure to the glass tiles until the grout has completely set.
If you have chosen to install your glass tile and grout it yourself, you will likely save a nice chunk of money. You will need to have good attention to detail, and you should not take on this task if you have no previous home improvement experience. It’s not a difficult feat, but can be nearly impossible to fix mistakes when your grout glass tile.
