Heuchera is an easy care, shade loving plant that produces vibrantly colored leaves that will quickly engulf a wreath form to create a unique living wreath to display on the front door. Since heuchera plants range in height size, choose a compact growing heuchera to create this live wreath, such as the Georgia Peach Heuchera, Caramel Heuchera or Dolce Crème Brulee’ Heuchera, three varieties which are compact growers that produce rich leaf colors.
Materials Needed to Make a Live Heuchera Wreath
*24 inch living wreath ring
*Pre-punched coir (coconut fiber) wreath liner
*28 heuchera plugs or smallest heuchera plants available
Create Wreath Planting Base
Line the 24 inch living wreath ring with the pre-punched coir (coconut fiber) wreath liner. Moisten the potting soil and fill the wreath liner with it, firming the potting soil slightly while placing it into the wreath liner. Fold the wreath liner flap back over the top of the potting soil and clamp the metal wreath back into place. Flip the wreath over, front side up, and get ready to plant the heuchera.
Plant Heuchera Into Wreath
Plant each opening in the wreath liner with one heuchera plug. If heuchera plugs are not available, use the smallest heuchera plants available (cell packs work well for this) and plant one into each wreath liner opening. After all the heucheras are planted, water each plant with a wand-end watering container to ensure each plant receives sufficient water.
Place the Live Heuchera Wreath in a Sunny Location
Place the live wreath flat (heucheras facing upward) in a sunny location, but not in direct sunlight. Allow the live wreath to remain lying flat for two weeks so the heuchera plant roots can become established. Water the live wreath, making sure each heuchera plant receives water, twice per week using a water soluble plant food. A 20-10-20 water soluble plant food will keep the heuchera healthy and growing profusely.
Caring for the Live Heuchera Wreath
On the third week the live heuchera wreath is ready to be placed in it’s permanent home. Hang the live wreath vertically on the front door and continue with the twice per week water and feeding schedule. The live wreath can be watered while hanging on the door, but to ensure a thorough watering, removing it from the door and laying it flat is the best option. Remove any dead leaves and snip off any unruly growth when the live heuchera wreath is watered.
