Everyone wants to have a great evening out with your best girl. James Baney, Keyboardist with the metal band The Devil Wears Prada and his fiance Rachel Young know how to spend a great evening together. James and Rachel did a little preparation beforehand. They had an afternoon out at a pumpkin farm and while they were there they picked out several interesting pumpkins. These were left outside for a couple of days decorating the front door.
James picked up Rachel and they headed for the store to pick up a few snacks such as cider, candy, popcorn and a good movie that fit with their mood. They arrived carrying their pumpkins and bags inside. James found newspapers to cover the kitchen table and they plopped all the pumpkins on top.
A search for the best knife started and large butcher knives were found. After a bit it was clear that smaller, sharper knives would be better. Cleaning out the pumpkins is messy and a bit of a slimy job. Keep the faith, it is over in no time. Continuing they proceeded to each carve their own pumpkin. This is where you really want to use your imagination. It is much better than cutting someone else’s stencil.
With the two biggest pumpkins carved, James separated and cleaned the pumpkin seeds from the pulp. He washed them well in a large colander. Rachel tackled the smaller pumpkin. This was a special pumpkin for her dog, whose nickname is Monster. She was carving the words and it was quite difficult. This small pumpkin was denser and much harder to carve. Both of them had jobs to do and working together they had fun talking and being together.
The smaller pumpkin was coming along but wasn’t finished so James began making the pumpkin seeds using Rachel’s recipe. He soaked them in apple cider and spread them out on a paper towel. He set the oven to 250 degrees. He divided them in half and put them on separate baking sheets spreading them out evenly. He mixed up cinnamon, sugar and brown sugar and sprinkled one pan with this mixture. He salted the other pan of pumpkin seeds with coarse sea salt. They baked slowly while Rachel finished the small pumpkin. Rachel then gathered the mess up wrapping it up inside the spread out newspapers. James washed the carving tools and other dishes used.
They placed the pumpkins near the TV and put tea lights in the bottom and lit them using long sticks of uncooked spaghetti . A few photos to post to Facebook and the seeds that were baking were ready. They put the seeds in two small bowls with an extra bowl out for woody bits or shells.
Rachel made hot cider while James put the movie, Hocus Pocus in. They settled down on the sofa among their handiwork, their pumpkin seeds and of course Wonka Candy and enjoyed the silly but fun to watch movie.
He took her home, helping her in with the smaller pumpkin for her room and kissed her goodnight.
And that, friends, is how to have a wonderful fall date night.
