Helping young children learn about money can really be a lot of fun. I have found that helping kindergarteners learn about money is as fun to plan as it is to participate in. There are several ways that you can help kindergarteners to learn about money. Although the options which are listed below are made mostly for homeschoolers, if you are looking to give your child extra help, some of the tips below may prove helpful.
Use Real Money
Often in schools you will see cardboard money, and artificial plastic pieces used to teach kids how to count. If you are a homeschooler you have the opportunity to use whatever you want. In my experience I have found that using real money seems to work best. You can help them with their counting skills, and help them learn how to identify the coins. Instead of going straight to the worksheets start with the money first. Remember that one of the best ways to learn is by using real money. Give your children plenty of opportunity to get hands on experience.
When shopping teach
When you go food shopping, take the time to teach your child about money while food shopping. If there is something like a piece of candy that they want show them using the coins how much this would cost. It may also help to write out the amount on paper so that they can see the relation between numbers and money. There is really a lot that can be learned when you are shopping. Take advantage of these opportunities to help your children learn. If you are not a home schooler you can focus on after school and on the weekends to help them get extra practice with money.
Play games that involve money
There are plenty of games where you can use money to help your children. Monopoly is the most common one that comes mind. They have different games that are based on your child’s age group. Try to find age appropriate games for your child. This is really a great way to have fun while teaching your child about money.
Some children learn best by visual aids. There are plenty of videos which you can watch along with your child which will help them understand and learn the concept of money. Take the time to do a little bit of searching online to see how many educational videos you can find.
