If you have been dating your boyfriend for some time, you might be getting antsy about him proposing. It is likely that there will come a time when you will want to suggest that you are ready to get married, if he has not already brought it up himself. Here are some tips on how to hint to your boyfriend to propose.
1. Bring up a recently engaged or married friend.
Ask your boyfriend how many years into the relationship he believes someone should propose. This will give you some insight as to when he may be planning to propose to you. If his answer seems to be a lot different than your own, be sure to let him know how soon you think is ideal.
2. Start placing engagement ring advertisements in front of him.
If you live together, this may be easier for you to do. Once he begins to see lots of engagement ring pictures, he might start to realize that a marriage proposal is on your mind. To make it really obvious, consider changing his computer’s homepage to your favorite engagement ring. (Note: You probably won’t want to take this step unless you’ve talked about engagement already).
3. Talk about your wedding in subtle ways.
Consider asking, “Who will be your best friend?” or “When you get married, do you want a church ceremony or an outdoor wedding?” This will give you some insight as to how your boyfriend feels about marriage and could be the perfect opening for a serious marriage discussion.
4. Make sure the timing is right.
Both of you should be in a good financial place when you get engaged to spend the rest of your lives together. You can’t expect your boyfriend to propose if he has recently lost his job, for example. On the other hand, if your boyfriend has recently gotten a promotion and the two of you are financially stable, it might be the perfect time for engagement.
5. Ask him if he sees himself marrying you.
If you have been together for some time and the topic of engagement has not yet come up, it is ideal to ask him if he sees it in your future. There is a chance that he might not take your relationship seriously enough or may not even believe in marriage at all.
Keep in mind that if your boyfriend wants to propose to you, he will. If he hasn’t brought up the subject of marriage once, it could be because he’s waiting to see if you really want to marry him or not. On the other hand, he might not want to get married at all. Although breaking up may not seem like the easiest thing, it is a much better alternative to wasting your time with someone who never wants to marry you.
