Installing new kitchen cabinet drawer pulls can update the appearance of existing cabinets. It is also one of the final steps of installing new kitchen cabinets. You may also decide to install kitchen cabinet drawer pulls into existing cabinets that have never had drawer pulls.
Step 1: Determine the amount of kitchen cabinet drawer pulls that you will need for this project. You should also determine if you plan on matching patterns with the rest of the hardware in your kitchen. At the very least, matching the finish for all hardware is standard.
Step 2: Measure the surface of the kitchen cabinet drawer. Cut out a template using brown kraft paper or a piece of a paper bag that exactly matches the surface of the door.
Step 3: Create a drilling template using that piece of brown paper, carefully measuring so the hardware will be perfectly centered within the area of the drawer.
Step 4: Punch out the areas for the hole in the drilling template, using a nail or nail set.
Step 5: Place the template over the drawer, and mark the location for each kitchen cabinet pull with a pencil. Remove the template, and make sure that the holes are perfectly level using a carpenter’s level. Make any necessary adjustments before continuing.
Step 6: Drill a 3/8 inch hole out of the front of each drawer, matching the pencil marks exactly.
TIP: To avoid the drill skipping, and marring the surface of the drawer, you can place a small piece of blue painter’s tape over the area you intend to drill. The tape will give the drill something to grip while beginning the hole. Just be sure that you are transferring the pencil marks precisely to give you a good guide to drill.
Step 7: Insert the screw into the hole you have just created, with the head facing in towards the interior of the drawer.
Step 8: On the other side, twist on the drawer pull– it should be threaded to accept the screw easy. Continue turning until the drawer pull is securely fastened.
TIP: You may need to use washers on the inside of the kitchen cabinet drawer or to use a screwdriver on the screw to snugly install each drawer pull.
Step 9: Install drawer pulls until all of the kitchen cabinet faces have the appropriate hardware.
