Growing up, I was always taught it was polite to bring the hostess a small token of appreciation when visiting someone else’s home. Bottles of wine and/or baked goods can get a little boring after awhile, so I began to keep a small closet full of items to take with me at a moment’s notice. Here are a few ideas on how you can keep your own hostess gift closet.
If you have plenty of space in your home, a closet is the idea place for keeping hostess gifts. However, smaller spaces will work just as well. This can range from a drawer, cabinet, or even just a plastic storage container with lid. You will want to make sure the space is cool and dry to protect any goodies you have stored there. Also, it should be sealable to keep the items as protected as possible.
There are two ways you can handle the wrapping of your hostess gift by keeping it handy in your closet area. One, a varied supply of wrapping papers, ribbon, and tape within your hostess gift closet make it very convenient to grab a gift on the go. Or, consider pre-wrapping your hostess gifts as they are purchased. (Keep a sticky note on each reminding you what is inside.)
Types of Items to Include
Hostess gift items really can vary from gift recipient to gift recipient. Candles, room sprays, bath products, etc. should all be kept in airtight bags while storing in your hostess gift closet in case of leakage or melting. Other great long lasting options include aprons, wine charms, dish towels, utensils, and other unique pieces specific to the home and/or kitchen. One easy way of choosing hostess gifts to keep around that do not spoil is to look online or at small boutique shops. These shops usually have fun and unique items that will definitely surprise your hostess. Or, if you frequent a particular household often, you can store gifts with a particular recipient in mind.
If bringing a bottle of wine is still your staple, then stock up ahead of time. Many beverage shops and wine stores have sales in which you purchase one bottle at regular price and get several more for a reduced price. Choose a variety of wine types to keep on hand just in case a last minute dinner party or event comes up. Select a few decorative wine bags or charms to pair with the bottle.
