Being indoors during the winter months really can make learning a bit on the dull side. There are however several things that you can do to keep homeschooling fun, and exciting during this time. Below you will find several ideas, and suggestions on how you can accomplish this.
Creating a theme for each week can really be a lot of fun. Since it is cold why not try using warm summer, or spring themes. For example for one week you can base all of your lessons around a beach. This way any activity that you have in class for the week will be based around this. You can even have the kids help you to decorate for the fun theme weeks.
Break up the day
Just because it’s cold out this does not have to mean that you are stuck in the house. It may take some time to get the kids all bundles up, but why not go outside for a fifteen, or ten minute walk. How long you are outside really depends on how cold it is. Of course when it comes to the length of time for your walk that really will be based on your own personal judgment. The point is to get out and let the kids burn a little energy. It really does help to make the more enjoyable if you break up the work a bit.
Baking the winter blues away
During the winter months you will find it to be a lot of fun to do some baking. What is really great for homeschoolers is that there is so much that can be learned by just making some cookies or cupcakes with your children. Personally I like to make up little worksheets for them to fill out as we go. The worksheets can be based on the recipe you are using. For older kids you can a simple fill in the blank worksheet. For younger kids you can have them do a picture match based on the recipe. This really help to make learning fun, and it gives your kids the opportunity to work on more than one skill at a time.
Plan a few winter play days
If you know of other homeschoolers in the area, why not plan to get the kids together for a fun filled play day or afternoon. You can speak to the parents about this and pick a date and time. If the weather is bad out you may have to reschedule the play days, for when it is safe to drive the kids over. This helps to make the winter’s go faster.
