Little babies need warm milk, and the milk starts out that way, but it doesn’t take long for it to cool down, particularly if you run air conditioning. The milk will stay warm much longer, though, if you make a bottle cozy for your baby. The bottle cover, made of warm, fleece material, is easy to make even for a sewing beginner.
Fleece material is ideal for the bottle cozy but you can also use felt and some other types of fabrics. Choose something that is not too thick, not too thin, and something that is easy to launder. Some choices include quilted fabrics, thick, stretchy lace or even t-shirt material.
You won’t need a very large piece of cloth to make the bottle cozy. Make one for large bottles and another for small bottles. In fact, make several different cozies. That way, if a couple of them are in the laundry you still have more from which to choose!
Cut a piece of fleece – or other material – to the size of the bottom of the material. Set the bottle on the fabric, draw around the bottom, then cut it out slightly larger than the drawing. Now cut a strip of fleece to go around the bottle itself. Lay the bottle on the material, roll the fleece around it, then cut it a half-inch longer than you need. The material should be cut so that it comes up to the ring around the cap of the bottle – where the nipple meets the cap.
Stitch the two end of the fabric together so that you then have a cylinder shape. Pin the circular piece of fleece to the cylinder and stitch around it. Trim all edges an eighth of an inch away from the stitching. Turn the bottle cozy right side-out then fold the top edge inside the cozy. Stitch around it to hem. If the material you chose will unravel fold it down once, then again, then hem. Keep this in mind when you decide on how long to cut the fabric.
Wrap elastic around the cap of the bottle then cut it to that length. Sew the quarter-inch elastic around the hem, on the inside, at the top of the cozy. Stretch the elastic a little as you sew it in place.
Instead of elastic you can hem the top of the cozy, use a safety pin to thread a piece of ribbon through, then use the ribbon to tie the cozy shut. To use the cozies, slide the bottle inside, then, if it’s a ribbon-tie design, tie it shut. If it’s an elastic design the elastic will simply wrap around the bottle and hold the cozy in place. Your baby’s milk will never get cold again!
