Recycle old saucepans or purchase an inexpensive new pan for this craft project. A rustic saucepan arrangement looks particularly lovely in a log cabin, camp, or any home decorated with a rustic or primitive theme. This saucepan arrangement also makes a great housewarming gift.
Rustic Saucepan Arrangement
Small aluminum saucepan
Sage green acrylic paint
Strip of plaid fabric for bow
3 pine cones
Dried florals to match the plaid ribbon
1. Wash and dry the aluminum saucepan. If the saucepan is recycled and has paint on it, gently rub with sandpaper to make sure the saucepan surface is smooth. This will help the paint adhere to the surface. Wrap the end of the saucepan handle with paint tape.
2. Pour a small amount of green paint into an old bowl or paint tray. Paint the outside and bottom of the saucepan. Place the saucepan open end down on an old newspaper or plastic bag. Let dry completely. Repeat this step. I find that two coats of paint is usually necessary to make sure the saucepan is completely covered. Once the saucepan is completely dry, paint the inside and top rim of the pan. Let dry completely. Repeat this step. When the saucepan is completely dry, remove the paint tape from the handle.
3. Cut a piece of floral foam so that it fits snugly inside the saucepan. Glue this piece of floral foam to the inside of the saucepan. Glue moss to the top of the floral foam. Arrange the greenery in the floral foam so that it forms a full arrangement. Glue three pine cones to the center of the arrangement. Glue the faux berries and dried florals around and throughout the pine cones.
4. Tie the fabric strip around the handle, then tie into a bow. Trim the fabric ends. The fabric is suppose to fray, and gives the arrangement a rustic look. For added rustic charm, I like to add rusted tin shapes to the top of the fabric bow, hanging from the saucepan handle, or placed at the center of the arrangement. They sell rusty tin pieces at most craft stores.
The saucepan arrangement also make a unique, festive look when decorated in a holiday theme. I made a Halloween themed saucepan arrangement for a client. I painted the saucepan black, then painted orange pumpkins around the outside of the pan. The bow was made of a Halloween print, and I glued spiders throughout the arrangement.
Flea markets and yard sales are a great place to find saucepans needed for this rustic arrangement. Sam’s Club offers a small aluminum saucepan for $9.44.
