When it comes to Christmas ornaments, there is nothing more traditional then seeing a snowman Christmas ornament on a tree. It is a reminder of childhood days and having fun out in the snow. Buying this decoration out in the stores can add up to a lot of money. Many of the snowman Christmas ornaments are ceramic and collectible. This can make the price on the tag go way up. If you want to have this incredible look but at a fraction of the price, you should make your own snowman Christmas ornament.
It is an easy craft project to do. You can even get children involved in the process with you. With a little work, you can create better Christmas decorations then you can buy in the store.
What You Will Need to Make a Snowman Christmas Ornament
3 Styrofoam balls of varying sizes
Christmas ornament hook
black permanent marker
You will need 3 Styrofoam balls of varying sizes to start your snowman Christmas ornament. Think of this as needing a small one for the head. A medium size ball for the body and a larger one for the base. It is just like building a snowman from snow. Once you have these simple shapes, your Christmas decoration will begin to take shape.
Glue the balls together to create your figure. You will want to allow them to dry fully before you attempt to hang or even move your snowman Christmas ornament. If you move it too soon, the figure will fall apart. Craft glue is the best thing to use for this. Using a hot glue gun will cause the Styrofoam to melt and cause a melted snowman Christmas ornament. This is not the look that you are going for.
Cut small pieces of the craft wire to mimic the use of branches. You will poke these into the body of the snowman Christmas ornament to create the arms. You can add another small piece of wire if you want to look like a smaller branch coming off the larger one.
Tie a small piece of thin ribbon around the neck to look like a scarf. You do not need to include this part of your Christmas decoration if you do not have thin ribbon that is needed for this step.
The final step to this holiday craft is putting on the finishing touches. Use your black permanent marker to make dots that will look like pieces of coal. You will use these to create eyes, nose, a mouth, and buttons down his front. This will give your snowman Christmas ornament some personality. Once you have glued on the Christmas ornament hook and allowed everything to dry, you will ready to hang your decoration for everyone to see.
