A lot of people decorate their front yards for Halloween and one great addition to your front yard is a straw man. This straw man may not be the straw man from the Wizard of Oz but it can still be a fun project for your family. Here are five steps for making a straw man for Halloween.
Plastic Bags or Burlap Sacks
The first thing you will need when making a straw man for Halloween are plastic bags or burlap sacks; either one will do fine. If you are using plastic bags; colorful and scented plastic bags in pink and blue and purple will do, but you might have to double up because they can tear easily. For thicker and sturdier bags you can buy either white or black bags like Hefty but make sure they are not drawstring bags. For burlap sacks, check your local hardware store or big general chain stores. Buy burlap sacks that are 6 x12 inches big.
Straw or Cotton Balls
The second thing you will need when making a straw man for Halloween is straw or cotton balls. For the straw, you can check local hay distributors or farmers. For the cotton balls, you are going to need at least 80 bags of those big cotton balls for each part of the straw man. Pull apart the cotton balls and stuff each burlap sacks or plastic bag with them until full.
Tape and Rubber Bands
The third thing you will need when making a straw man for Halloween is tape and rubber bands. Use the tape and rubber bands to close the end of the burlap sacks or plastic bags. Stuff the bags with as much straw or cotton balls as possible, push back the straw and cotton balls and then twist the ends of the bags and tighten with rubber bands and then tape underside hidden. Do this with each part of the straw man.
The fourth thing you will need to do is assemble the straw man. After filling the burlap sacks and plastic bags, you should have two arms, two legs and a chest and the head of the straw man. Take two bags and tape two sticks to the back of them and place them in front or back of your yard as close together as possible. The sticks should be long enough to place the body or chest of the straw on to them. Next, tape two sticks in the back of the arms of the straw man. The ends of the stick should be sticking up at the top of the arms and insert carefully into the chest or body of the straw man. Next, top with the straw man’s head. A stick should be inserted inside the head and onto the body of the straw man.
The fifth thing to do is decorate the straw man. You can paste on buttons as eyes of the straw man(paste will work better for plastic). A floppy hat with a wig underneath. A black coat or a shawl, if the straw man is a woman. Two barrels of leaves on each sides of the straw man; the barrels can be decorated with Halloween stickers. Small pumpkins around the figure of the straw man and you can draw on the mouth of the straw man.
