Everyone needs coasters for their drinks to protect their furniture. Slate tile coasters are easy to make and look great sitting on your coffee table. These coasters also make great gifts.
Plain tiles can be found at your local home improvement store. Make sure the tile is a non-glazed tile instead of a glossy one. Plain tiles can usually be obtained for less than thirty cents a tile.
Permanent stamp ink pads
Adhesive backed cork
Wood mounted stamps
Before you begin make sure the tiles are clean and dry. Have all your supplies together in your workspace. Place newspaper on the worktable to prevent any ink from getting on the table. You can do the tiles in one of two ways. You can either use the alcohol inks for the background and then stamp on it or you can use the permanent stamp ink pad for the background and use a contrasting stamp color to stamp an image.
Alcohol inks and permanent stamp ink pads are sold in hobby and scrapbooking stores and come in a variety of colors. Wood mounted stamps are better for stamping on the slate tiles because they are sturdier and stamp a clearer image on the tile coasters. Wood mounted stamps also can be found in craft and hobby stores and are available in a wide range of categories. The cork is also available in craft stores.
To use the alcohol inks as a background, choose several complimenting colors and squirt a few drops of each color on the applicator. Cover the entire surface of the tile.
Work quickly because the alcohol inks dry very fast. When the background is completely dry; ink the stamp image with permanent ink. Permanent ink is acid free, archival ink which works well on non porous surfaces. You can also stamp the background of the tile with the permanent ink by dabbing a cloth rag on the stamp pad and rubbing it across the tile. Let it dry and stamp an image with the wood mounted stamps in a contrasting color.
When all ink on the slate coasters has dried, spray the coasters with several coats of a clear sealer. Spray them outside or in a well ventilated area. Let them dry for 24 – 48 hours before handling.
After the slate tiles are completely dried, apply the adhesive backed cork on the bottom of the slate coasters to protect furniture from scratches and nicks. The cork comes on a roll and can be cut to size.
Enclose the slate tile coasters in bubble wrap and package in sets of four to give as gifts. Your friends and family will appreciate your gift every time the coasters are used.
