When it comes to reading, and various reading and writing assignments that you give children it can be very difficult for them to remember exactly what needs to be done. One of the easiest ways to help them remember is to give them a bookmark with a to do list on it. This really works well when it comes to book reports, or teaching young children to take notes while they are reading.
What is really nice is that you can easily use your computer to make the bookmark. Or if you prefer you can use a brightly colored piece of construction paper. Simple write down the assignments that have to be done for the particular book. You can also leave a few blank lines where your child can jot down a few notes to help them remember a characters name, or an event that took place. If you are printing the book mark from your computer you may want to use cardstock paper. This paper is a lot more durable and with kids one thing that you need is durability. Once you have printed out the bookmark you can have your child color the bookmark. This is really a lot of fun. Make sure that they do not color over any of the blank lines that you have left for them to fill in. I have also found it useful to attach a string to the top of the book mark. This way they can easily leave it in their book and come back to it once they have finished.
On the to do list bookmark, I have found it really nice to add little boxes that will enable children to check off each item. This way as they complete each item that will see that they are making progress on their list. It really helps to motivate children to push themselves a little harder when they see that the work is actually getting done. They can easily use a marker to check off their assignments as they finish them. Not only is this a great way to help your child to be responsible for completing their own work, but it will make your job easier as well. They will be able to complete their assignments a lot easier without having to ask what’s next.
When you first start I would recommend that you keep the to do list simple. Start off with just one or two assignments. This way they will not be overwhelmed by a really long list of stuff to do. For younger kids it may be best to just put one assignment on their to do list. This will certainly help to make things a lot easier in the long run.
