Most people who knit and sew take the yarn from a skein and roll it into a large ball. It’s a hassle to do this but it makes it so much easier to knit or crochet because the yarn doesn’t tangle. As you do your needlework the ball gets smaller and smaller. Sometimes you can use the leftover yarn for other small projects. One such project has nothing to do with knitting or crocheting. Take a small ball of yarn and turn it into a Halloween spider in minutes!
If you have a small ball of black yarn that’s perfect, but if not, you can use spray paint to color the yarn. You might have to spray it more than once to get full coverage. Make sure the very end of the yarn is glued to the ball before painting. After the paint is dry you can decide on the items you want to use to create the spider’s face. Eyes can be wiggly eyes from a craft store or eyes cut from felt or cloth. A mouth can be made from a half-moon or circle shape cut from felt. Another choice for a mouth is a tiny piece from a red pipe cleaner.
Use black pipe cleaners to make the legs for the spider. To do this, lay the spider so that the face is upside-down but is facing you. Glue four pipe cleaners across the belly of the spider, laying them horizontally, and spacing them evenly apart across the entire belly. On each side, go out a couple of inches, then bend the pipe cleaner so that it sticks straight up. Do this to each one of the legs. Make sure the bends are in the same place on each pipe cleaner. At the opposite end of each leg, make another small bend, then turn the spider over and stand him up. The small bends create the feet for the finished spider.
Since pipe cleaners come in 12″ lengths the ball of yarn you use for the body should not be very large or the spider will have really short legs. Also, if you have black yarn, but don’t want to use a lot of it, you can cover a small ball with the yarn. Simply wrap it around and around until you can no longer see the ball underneath then glue on the legs. The spiders are perfect for decorating most any area of your home.
