It’s turkey time once again and this year I plan on making a healthy Thanksgiving themed craft with my little girl. Using apples, raisins, marshmallows, peanut butter and some colorful candies, we will re-create a precious edible turkey. And this turkey craft is an excellent activity to engage your kids in on Thanksgiving Day, especially after a heavy dinner. It is also a fun project to do in a classroom setting, Sunday school, a play date, a fall birthday party or even a Girl Scout or Boy Scout meeting.
For these adorable turkey themed treats, begin by purchasing a sack of medium sized red delicious apples. Rinse the apples thoroughly and then place them in a large clear bowl at the center of your work space. Then, buy the following supplies at your local grocery store: multi-colored toothpicks, marshmallows, creamy peanut butter, raisins, candy corn and vibrant gum drops. Place each item in a small bowl and set them strategically around your craft table.
Now, give each participant a paper plate to work upon. Disperse the apple amongst the children and pass around the other ingredients. Start by placing three of the colored toothpicks on one side of the apple. Then stick one more toothpick into the other side of the apple. Press colorful gum drops onto the three toothpicks to represent a turkey’s multihued tail. You can use two gum drops per toothpick if you so choose, or for a healthier alternative, consider using green and purple grapes.
Next, attach a large white marshmallow onto the remaining toothpick. Then utilizing the creamy peanut butter as glue, adhere a piece of candy corn onto the flat side of the marshmallow for a beak. For the turkey’s eyes, employ the same method to apply raisins to the marshmallow.
This cute turkey craft will surely put a smile on your little guest’s faces as they enjoy their homemade after dinner treats. Encourage the kids to use their creativity and consider introducing other add on items such as: chocolate chips, M&Ms, peanuts, colored marshmallows and more. You can even design a grassy bed to rest your turkeys on by using some coconut shavings and a few drops of green food coloring. Mix the grassy green coconut with fall themed sprinkles for a homespun autumn scene.
And, you can pre-make these darling apple turkey snacks to bring along on Thanksgiving Day or easily just make a few as a special after school treat!
