Waffles are not just for breakfast. They can also be the foundation for a wonderful dessert, or even an afternoon snack. While you can always buy frozen waffles, nothing beats the taste of waffles made from scratch. If you happen to be a chocolate lover, this recipe is sure to please.
Things You Need
1 ½ cups of all purpose flour
½ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons of baking powder
3 heaping tablespoons of cocoa, the unsweetened kind
1 cup milk
2 large eggs
4 tablespoons of melted butter (margarine works fine)
1 tablespoon of softened butter (margarine works fine here too)
¾ cup confectioner’s sugar
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Preheat the waffle iron.
Combine flour, salt, granulated sugar, baking powder, and cocoa. Set aside for a moment.
In a separate mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, and melted butter and blend thoroughly.
Cut the liquid into the dry ingredients and blend until the batter has a smooth consistency.
Prepare the sauce for the topping. Combine softened butter, confectioner’s sugar, vanilla extract, and a single teaspoon of milk. The sauce should be somewhat firm, but smooth. Set the sauce to one side.
Spray the preheated waffle iron with a good quality non-stick cooking spray, and then pour the waffle mixture into the iron. Cook until the waffle is a golden brown. While still hot top with sauce, then add a liberal amount of shavings. Drizzle chocolate syrup lightly over the body of the treat.
Tips and Warnings
You can also add fruit to this recipe with ease. After the waffle is done, apply the sauce, then add a layer of your favorite fruit. Strawberries, cherries, or even slice bananas work very well. In a pinch, you’ll find that canned cherry pie filling works great. Canned pie-filling works just fine. You can also top with vanilla ice cream, then add the shavings and drizzle the chocolate syrup over the top. Be creative and add anything in you normally like to have along with chocolate.
